Citing Sources What does citing our sources mean: It means that we are making a document of all the sources we have used. Imagine someone used your original work/ideas and didn’t give you credit. You’d probably look like this:

So, what can we do to avoid this?

I need to cite my sources when: someone else’s idea, opinions, or theories. Reported facts, statistics, pieces of information Quotations or written words When we decide to paraphrase someone else’s words.

I don’t need to cite my sources when: It is something new or your own words. It is common knowledge: A) Facts found in many places – easily – Barack Obama was born 1961. B) It is easily observable: Apples can be many colors. C) Common sayings: “To each is own…”
