Urban League ► Created by black and white progressives to ease Af-Ams into city life during the Great Migration (movement north) ► The Chicago U.L. organizing meeting was held at the Wabash Avenue Y.M.C.A. in 1916. ► Cheryle Jackson became the first female President of the CUL in 2006 and is running for a Senate seat today.

Marcus Garvey ► Jamaican who preached racial pride & Christian faith and for black people around the world to “unite”. ► Established “Black Star Line” – group of steam ships to bring Americans back to Africa.

Pan-African Flag ► Red, Green, Black flag = blood, land, & race (not African flag, but Universal) ► Pan-African – uniting people of the black race across the globe ► S. America, Caribbean, N. America, Africa, Europe.

UNIA ► UNIA stood for the “Universal Negro Improvement Association” ► It was a black nationalist movement started by Garvey in 1914 ► Encouraged people of African descent to celebrate their culture, history, and heritage in a world that made them feel inferior

A. Phillip Randolph ► College-educated, dignified, well-dress journalist who lived in Harlem ► He was recruited to lead the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters – a union for black porters working on Pullman (fancy train) cars ► “Service not servitude”
