1
Endocrine and Circulatory Systems Moving materials and signals throughout your body
2
Question: Compare and contrast hormones and neurotransmitters.
3
Endocrine System The system in your body responsible for circulating hormones signals sent throughout the blood stream
4
Hormones Proteins or lipids released by the body, transmitting signals to specific cells, telling them to perform specific functions 2 types: Steroids lipids, so easily enter cell Non-steroids generally proteins or other molecules that cannot enter the cell
5
Cells and receptors Any cell with a receptor for a certain hormone is considered a target cell to receive that hormone’s message
6
Cells and receptors Any cell with a receptor for a certain hormone is considered a target cell to receive that hormone’s message
7
Endocrine Glands Glands within the body that secrete one or more proteins, sending messages throughout the body. **These messages go directly into the blood stream! Regulated by feedback your body senses when enough is in your blood, and tells your gland to stop producing the hormone
8
Glands in your body
9
Pancreas- an example of feedback Produces INSULIN Chemical released to REMOVE glucose from your blood stream Produces GLUCAGON Chemical released to ADD glucose to your blood stream
10
Circulatory System
11
Designed to move oxygen and nutrients throughout your body Both enter through DIFFUSION
12
Diffusion in the Circulatory System Of Oxygen… Occurs in lungs- Lungs have high concentration of O, blood has low O diffuses INTO blood stream Of Nutrients Occurs in intestines Nutrients have high nutrient concentration, blood has low Nutrients diffuse INTO blood stream
13
Human Heart 4 chambers! Left atrium, left ventricle Right atrium, right ventricle
14
Heart Digram
15
The pathways Right side blood enters from body (oxygen poor) and is pumped to lungs Left side blood enters from lungs (oxygen rich) and is circulated throughout body returns to right side *Called a double loop system
16
the lingo… Arteries carry blood AWAY from the heart Veins carry blood BACK to heart *Which is better for feeling your pulse? Capillaries TINY blood vessels in your body where most exchange happens
17
Question List the things blood carries and why each is important to you.
