Following the “Yes” Test: If you meet the requirements you will be successful on this essay!!! ___ Works Cited page in MLA format ___ 5 reliable, credible sources on Works Cited page ___ In-text citations following all information from sources ___ In-text citations must refer to all sources on the Works Cited page ___ 4-6 pages in length ___ Typed, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, double-spaced ___ Proper MLA page set-up (margins, headings, header) ___ Convention errors on the first page do not detract from the content ___ 3 drafts with peer edits have been completed ___5 different Rhetorical Devices labeled and highlighted ___Persuasive Thesis (should OR should not statement)

Citations and Rhetorical Devices In-Text Citations: Citations within the essay itself. You should have one citation per body paragraph. Works Cited Citations: Entire MLA information listed in the back of your essay with sources alphabetized. ALL sources referenced in your essay must be listed in your Works Cited page. In addition, please make sure you include 5 different rhetorical devices in your essay.

MLA Format Heading: Left side with name, teacher, class, and date assignment is due Header: On all pages. Includes your last name and page number. Title: underneath heading and header OR a use a cover page (optional) Works Cited Page: In alphabetical order and using hanging format. Check the Font: Make sure you use Times New Roman, 12 point font.

Setting Up Sources (Citation Sandwich) Step 1: Set-Up – Give the context of where the source comes from. Step 2: Evidence – cite the source with in- text citation. Step 3: Analysis - Analyze how it is significant in your essay and how it connects to your thesis. * A Note about Citations: If use the same source multiple times in one paragraph, cite once. If the same sources is used multiple times throughout the essay, cite in each paragraph.

Tips for Clear Writing Use a variety of sentence lengths. Don’t repeat terms more than three times in an essay. Don’t assume the reader knows what you are talking about, always define new words - Distinctio Include clear transitions and topic sentences. Incorporate a Theme.

Avoid also the following 1. Slang Words 2. numbers 1 – 1000 should be spelled out. 3. Abbreviations write out, then abbreviate. 4. Repetition of words or phrases.

Contractions Please spell out contractions, unless they are in a quotation. Won’t = Will not Can’t = Can not Don’t = Do not Shouldn’t = Should not

Avoid “Dead Words: So-Stuff Like-Things Very-’nuff A lot-Kinda Some-Sort of Gonna ‘Cause

The Other Side You MUST represent the other side to demonstrate you are fair and balanced. When you represent the other side, you MUST include a source to validate the other point of view.

Avoid Plagiarism Paraphrase your sources following the 2/3 – 1/3 rule. Include in-text citations Put a sources own words in quotation marks.

Consolidating Revised Drafts Step # 1 : Click on the Review Tab Step # 2: Click on Compare Step # 3: Click on the combine drop down when it appears Step # 4: This will show up and then find your original document and then the one that has been revised J Step # 5: And That’s it and it should look like this when all done And then you’re done you can close the revised one on the right and your good to go!! J
