Chapter 1: Introduction to Networks The Following CompTIA Network+ Exam Objectives Are Covered in This Chapter: 3.5 Describe different network topologies. MPLS Point-to-point Point-to-multipoint Ring Star Mesh Bus Peer-to-peer Client-server Hybrid 2
3
What is a Network? 3 In the computer world, the term network means two or more connected computers that can share resources like data and applications, office machines, an Internet connection, or some combination of these.
4
What is a LAN? 4 A local area network (LAN) is usually restricted to spanning a particular geographic location
5
Let’s connect these LAN’s together… 5
6
Hosts/Workstations communicate to a Server 6 The term host is used to describe pretty much anything that takes an IP address. You also see that the hosts can access the servers across the network—pretty much the general idea of having a network.
7
Wide Area Networks 7 Usually need a router port or ports. Span larger geographic areas and/or can link disparate locations. Are usually slower. Can choose when and how long we connect to a WAN. Can utilize either private or public data transport media such as phone lines.
8
MPLS 8 MPLS is a switching mechanism that imposes labels (numbers) to data and then uses those labels to forward data when the data arrives at the MPLS network
