1 Intro to Computers By Alex Pu Computational Thinking: Overview Making Information Available to the World with HTML an d Web Pages Desktop Publishing with MS Word Presentation of Information with MS PowerPoint Data Analysis and Visualization with MS Excel Visual programming with Alice Dynamic Webpage Programming with JavaScript CSE3 is an introductory course to technology through computers. It starts off through the introduction of HTML, where it is used to create a personalized homepage. The student goes through several Microsoft Office programs as well in order to increase the understanding of the functionality of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Also internet security, netiquette, and basic programm- ing are covered. Through HTML, the student is able to create their own webpages, where they are able to link to files and other webpages created throughout the course. Examples include calendars, PowerPoints, Excel spreadsheets, and pdfs. The basic skeletal structure has nested structures within, creating the framework of the website. Microsoft Word is the word processor focused on in this class. Its functionalities include the abilities to add pictures, format text, implement themes, and create PDFs. It helps convey information in a visually appealing manner, allowing for the reader to easily access the required information. Easy to use Good organization of information Built in themes and colors Able to move around pictures or text blocks easily Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program that allows for the user to create data charts and graphs based on information within the cells of the spreadsheet. Built in chart/graph makers Potential for computer logic for application Can put formulas in cells to make relations between information Through HTML and JavaScript, the students are able to create simple programs that have dynamic functionality, were the users of the webpage are able to actively interact with the webpage. In this case, the student creates a blackjack game. Through the creation of HTML id’s, an implicit randomization function, variable creation, and dynamic buttons, the student is able to create a working game. Similar to the real blackjack, however, the chances of winning seem to be slightly in the favor of the dealer… Alice is used as the introductory program in order to introduce the students to the idea of how basic programming is based on a sequence of events. Alice uses building blocks to build a movie based on classes, objects, methods, and variables. Through the clock program, the students were able to create a functioning 24 hour clock based on a double nested for loop that represented seconds, minutes, and hours. PowerPoint can be used to present information from other programs via the use of images on the slides. The students were able to put the information compiled in the Excel spreadsheets into Microsoft PowerPoints, making the information more visually appealing to any potential readers. Also, this poster was created in Microsoft PowerPoint, as the slide sizes are customizable and allow for good usage of the shape, text, and visual aspects of the program. Lab 9
