1- Definition of Health informatics. 2-The History of Health Informatics. 3-Why we need health informatics? 4-What does health informatics include? 5-Aspects of health informatics. Objectives:
3
Definition of Health informatics As defined by the U.S. Natiornal Library of Medicine, HIMSS(Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) What is Health Informatics? health informatics is the interdisciplinary study of the design, development, adoption, and application of IT-based innovations in healthcare services delivery, management, and planning.
4
Health informatics, medical informatics and biomedical informatics all of these terms are used interchangeably which mean: The optimal use of information, often aided by the use of technology, to improve individual health, health care, public health, and biomedical research. Different Terminology
5
Health informatics can be defined in two different ways: A scientific discipline that is concerned with the cognitive, information- processing, and communication tasks of healthcare practice, education, and research, including the information science and technology to support these tasks. A field of information science concerned with the management of all aspects of health data and information through the application of computers and computer technology Other definitions
6
The American Medical informatics association(AMIA) defined clinical informatics as the application of informatics and information technology to deliver healthcare services. It includes a wide range of topics from clinical documentation to provider order entry systems and from system design to system implementation and adoption issues. The field of informatics includes a number of related areas such as translational bioinformatics, clinical research informatics, consumer health informatics, and public health informatics.
8
The History of Health Informatics The health care industry didn't invest in technology as other sector like banking or retail, However for the last few years there has been a rise in money spent in health information technology The history of health informatics started for more than 50yeares, It started in dentistry in 1950 The field of health informatics, emerged when computer technology became sophisticated enough to manage large amounts of data.
9
When the standards for healthcare data reporting were established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). These include standards for “laboratory message exchange, properties for electronic health record systems, data content, and health information system security.” in the 1970s,widespread adoption of electronic health records (EHRs). The History of Health Informatics.. cont. In 1960’s, health informatics began to standardize as a field of study.
10
The Saudi Association for Health Informatics (SAHI) was established in 2006 It is a scientific association under the direct supervision of King Saud University for Health Sciences) KSAU-HS)and conduct its public activities to develop theoretical and application knowledge in order to provide scientific and applicable studies including consultation whether for private or public. Education Of health informatics in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, The Health Informatics Master Program started in September 2005. The History of Health Informatics.. Cont.
11
Why we need health informatics ?
12
Why is informatics important All work in informatics is motivated by the need to create new solutions by using IT, that enhance biomedical science, the health of populace, the quality and the safety of care that is provided to individuals
13
What does health informatics include? clinical informatics. nursing informatics. imaging informatics. consumer health informatics. public health informatics. dental informatics. clinical research informatics. bioinformatics. pharmacy informatics.
15
Aspects of health informatics architectures for electronic medical records and other health information systems used for billing, scheduling or research decision support systems (DSS) which are a class of computer-based information systems including knowledge based systems that support decision making activities in healthcare, including clinical decision support systems (CDSS).
16
standards (e.g. DICOM, HL7) and integration profiles to facilitate the exchange of information between healthcare information systems. controlled medical vocabularies such as the Standardized Nomenclature of Medicine clinical Terms (SNOMED CT), logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC) – are used to allow a standard, accurate exchange of data content between systems and providers. use of hand-held or portable devices.
