3 EQ: What was the importance of the Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam? The Cuban Missile Crisis In 1962, the U.S. discovered that the Soviets were secretly putting powerful missiles in Cuba These missiles could reach the U.S. and they were big enough to carry a nuclear bomb Khrushchev helped Castro set up communist gov’t in Cuba President Kennedy feared a surprise attack and ordered a blockade American warships surrounded Cuba Finally, Khrushchev agreed to remove missiles – Kennedy agreed not to attack Cuba

4 The Vietnam War North Vietnam - communist South Vietnam – non- communist In the 1960s, a communist group in South Vietnam began trying to overthrow the non- communist gov’t The communist fighters were called the Vietcong In 1965, U.S. sent soldiers to help fight Anti-war movement strong in the U.S. (hippies ) Some believed the U.S. should not interfere
