1. CLASS DISCUSSION Which food store do you or your family shop in for groceries (i.e. Stop and Shop, A&P, Hannafords?) Who does the shopping in your family?

2. If you had the option to choose Cheerios or the store brand for Cheerios, which would you choose? Explain your answer. (ex: Cheerios Vs. Joe’s O’s in Trader Joe’s) Did you ever notice the price label for the item? Can you understand this label?

3. Which is a better buy? The A & P is selling 5 apples for $3.40. Stop & Shop is selling 8 apples for $4.96. Where would you buy your apples? Why? Which is a better buy? How do you know?

4. Let’s take a closer look… A & PStop & Shop 3.40 ÷ 5 = $0.68  unit price 4.96 ÷ 8 = $0.62  unit price

5. Stop & Shop is the better buy because the price is cheaper per apple. Hint…they have a lower unit price. A & P = $0.68 per apple Stop & Shop = $0.62 per apple.

7. North Salem’s very own grocery store. You will be preparing to host a dinner with three of your friends or family. We have many deals here at SmartFoods. Your job is to find the unit price of all the products we offer, so you can decide how to best spend your money for tonight’s dinner party. Your job is to buy dinner for four people (3 people plus you.) You choose the menu and you have $30.00 to spend at SmartFoods Grocery Store.
