Determine chemical properties of an element Electrons in the outer most energy level To find valence electrons, add all numbers in the highest energy level. All atoms want filled valence shells (usually 8 electrons) Write electron configurations for Li and Na. Be and Mg. B and Al. C and Si. N and P. O and S. F and Cl. Ne and Ar.
