5. Turn of the Century At the end of the Civil War, Texas had had a boom in many industries. Under Governor Hogg, railroads were built through Texas. The railroads allowed farmers and ranchers to ship goods around the US. Manufacturing and industry grew at this time, too. Tompkins

30. Early 20 th Century The early 20 th century was a time of change in Texas. Oil, also known as petroleum, was found in Texas when Anthony Lucas drilled at Spindletop. Then, C.M. Joiner found more oil in East Texas. Pretty soon, oil derricks and boomtowns sprung up all over the state. Wildcatters hoped to find oil themselves. Once oil comes out of the ground, it can be sent by pipelines to a refinery to be made into useful products. Our boom and bust economy was booming! World War I and World War II started in Europe and many Texans went off to war to fight for the Allied Powers. One famous Texas soldier was Audie Murphy. Between the wars, there was an economic bust called the Great Depression. New Deal programs tried to get the economy going again. As the world changed between 1900 and 1950, so did Texas. Women and minorities wanted reform. They fought for and got suffrage. Other groups were not allowed to vote either because of segregation and poll taxes. Popular ideas during this time were prohibition, populism and the progressive movement. Tompkins
