5 A Unique Location: Ukraine Ukraine is a place of encounters of European Christians of the Byzantine and Latin traditions, dating as far back as the Middle Ages. The Kyivan Church, which was born in the baptism of Kyiv- Rus’ by Volodymyr in 988, managed to preserve Eucharistic unity between all Christians until the 16th century. During the modern period, from the 16th through the 19th centuries, confessional differentiation among Christians increased. Nevertheless, the collective popular memory preserved a desire to restore the visible unity of the Church. The contemporary period is fundamentally characterized by the “signs of the times”, which demonstrate the necessity of a change of heart and reconciliation among Christians belonging to different confessions. The Orange Revolution, which took place in Ukraine in December 2004, was actively supported by the IES as it was a peaceful and spiritual event which revealed the great desire of Ukrainian Christians – Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant – to unite in a political, national and religious sense.
