Current affairs in your industry Currently unprecedented profitability Challenges Don’t Change But The Bar Gets Higher Animal Care – Stalls vs Pen Gestation Food Safety – Certified free programs Antimicrobial Resistance – constrains treatment tools Foreign Animal Disease – ASF, CSF, FMD etc Emerging Diseases eg PEDV Trade - MCOOL Opportunities for vets, producers Be more fleet of foot in recognizing and controlling diseases Porcine Circovirus was a huge failure PEDV has been much more of a success story in Canada

Where are we going? PEDV is forcing a number of key stakeholders to work in a more coordinated way on health management. We are much better at this than in the past. Still much work to do in communication and developing trust between stakeholders Avoiding “Turf protection” can be a problem.

What will help implement the OAHN in your industry? Continue to expand upon the Raizo model Support the Veterinary Network of Practitioners and Specialists Develop a simple electronic methodology for reporting significant swine health events. Eg Exceptionally high mortality – High Path PRRS Eg Exceptionally severe disease – Porcine Circovirus Eg. Zoonotic interaction – Influenza A Improved communication eg Ontario Swine Health Plan Broader communication of health opportunities Eg. Porcine Circovirus vaccine management Cold chain management, Dosage, Administration
