Objectives Using Excel’s Solver to solve LP problems. Exercise. 2Tahani ALdweesh
3
Steps to solve (LP) Step 1: formulate the LP on paper Step 2: set up the problem in Excel Step 3: Add the solver add-in Step 4: Set up the Solver 3Tahani ALdweesh

Problem 1 The Blendex Oil Company blends a regular and premium product from two ingredients, heptane and octane. Each liter of regular is composed of exactly 50% heptane and 50% octane. Each liter of premium is composed of exactly 40% heptane and 60% octane. During this planning period there are exactly 200,000 liters of heptane and 310,000 liters of octane available. The profit contributions per liter of the regular and premium product are $0.03 and $0.04 per liter respectively. 4Tahani ALdweesh

Cont -The Blendex Oil Company blends a regular and premium product from two ingredients, heptane and octane. - Each liter of regular is composed of exactly : 50% heptane and 50% octane. - Each liter of premium is composed of exactly: 40% heptane and 60% octane. - there are exactly: 200,000 liters of heptane and 310,000 liters of octane available. - The profit contributions per liter of the regular and premium product are: $0.03 and $0.04 per liter respectively. 5Tahani ALdweesh

Step 1: formulate the LP on paper In this step we need to determine : 1-Decision Variables: HR = liters of heptane used to produce regular gasoline. OR = liters of octane used to produce regular gasoline HP = liters of heptane used to produce premium gasoline. OP = liters of octane used to produce premium gasoline 6Tahani ALdweesh
7
2-Objective function: to maximize the total contribution from selling both types of gasoline: Max = 0.03 * (HR + OR) + 0.04 * (HP + OP) 7Tahani ALdweesh RegularPremium
8
3-Constraints : A) - Each liter of regular must have exactly : 50% heptane and 50% octane: (50/100 )HR - (50/100 )OR 0.5 HR – 0.5 OR = 0 B)- Each liter of premium must have exactly: 40% heptane and 60% octane: (40/100 )HP - (60/100 )OP 0.6 HP – 0.4 OP = 0 8Tahani ALdweesh

C)- There is exactly 200,000 liters of heptane: HR + HP <= 200,000 D)- There is exactly 310,000 liters of octane: OR + OP <= 310,000 9Tahani ALdweesh
