The GMD is Not Enough Switching to Enterprise, navigating RDA changes, and making things easier with the 007 tag. (we promise this will be fun) Roberta Gebhardt and Jemma Hazen

007: What is it? Use field 007 to code the physical characteristics of an item, or parts of an item.

Why is the 007 important? Because Enterprise uses the 007 to determine format display icons and facets.

Wait…doesn’t the GMD* do that? * General Material Designation

The GMD is going away (the slide in which everyone panics)

Ok, so you’re thinking… My library with the GMD:My library without the GMD:

Records without GMDs in the MSC

Here’s how it looks in Enterprise

The Big Picture WorldCat will not support the GMD after March 2016 for RDA and hybrid records Increasingly, new records will be in RDA without GMDs At its March meeting, the CMC decided that we are no longer encouraging anyone to add GMDs.

The conversation we want to have:

The conversation we need to have:

How we are preparing for changes Add 007s to records that need them get them Whenever possible, select RDA records with 007s Figure out how to aid staff and patrons with searching Understand that changing with the times is what we do

Confusing Facets Facets options display information from the MARC record Facets are only as good as the cataloging

What happens without 007

MHS pilot to update 007s Historical Society 61,639 total bib records 28,324 total non- BOOK records 9,903 non-BOOK records have 007s Belgrade 46,504 total bib records 25,101 total non- BOOK records 23,662 non-BOOK records have 007s

MHS pilot to update 007s Historical Society 61,639 total bib records 28,324 total non- BOOK records 9,903 non-BOOK records have 007s Park High School 10,727 total bib records 1,271 total non- BOOK records 999 non-BOOK records have 007s

What we learned from the pilot Most records could be changed in batch with minimal involvement from members If your Item Types and Item Categories are descriptive making changes is easier Using Item Types and the GMD to select bib records, it takes about 20 minutes to change 500 records. Of the 321,957 non-BOOK bibs in the MSC about 110,000 don’t have a 007

How members can help When you bring records in through SmartPort for AV materials, select bibs with 007s Pick RDA records for new publications when given the choice If you spot a record without a 007 learn how to add one Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Changes to aid Staff Searching

Try Advanced Searching

Use Enterprise

Possible Admin changes

Conclusion RDA is here The GMD is going away The 007 is going to help us MSC Admin is making changes to records that will aid in display and searching for staff and patrons Member libraries can do their part with good cataloging
