Facilitator training You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful people (men and women) who will be able to teach others also. II Tim. 2:2 Centers of Church Based Training

“In the Church” Value of Context “Under the Church” Value of Responsibility “Through the Church” Value of Community “With other Churches” Value of Partnership “For the Church” Value of Mission “To God’s Glory” Value of Worship

Wisdom Process W What is the issue: What is at stake here? I Investigate Scripture: What does God say? I Investigate Scripture: What does God say? S Seek Counsel: What do wise people say? D Develop YOUR Response: What do I think? O Openly Discuss: What do we think together? M Move to Action! What will I or WE do?

Dynamics of Discussion

Ask Good Questions “The Key to good discussions is good questions" Short checklist for good questions Is it clear? Does it stimulate good thinking? Is it focused on the issue we are studying? Does it call for an exercise of judgment or more of a recall of facts?

Pitfalls to Avoid Questions that imply or assume an answer. Avoid, “Of course you all agree, don’t you?” and “What are the three great truths in this passage?” The later limits the answer and implies a fourth truth must be wrong. Questions with a “yes” or “no” answer. These questions leave no room for discussion. Use them sparingly. Combining two questions in one. Ask only one question at a time.

Pitfalls to Avoid Questions with a “right” answer. Preferably choose open- ended questions where there are several possible answers. Instead of asking “Where are the ten commandments found in the Bible?” save the time by telling them. Use questions designed to stimulate biblical wisdom about life. Questions too long to be remembered. Shorten the question. Perhaps there is more than one issue.

Be Creative Seek creative ways to raise the issue or illustrate the principles. Use the whiteboard or find pictures that illustrate the lesson. Play sound clips. Present a life situation to your group Use movie or TV clips. Include articles from other authors.

Tips to remember Keep to the time Watch your body language Be a person of integrity (build trust) Food is good Prepare in advance Placement of people in the group
