Major depressive disorder Diagnosed with at least 2 weeks of a depressed mood or loss in pleasure and interest Additionally requires at least four of these symptoms: Insomnia Appetite disturbances Loss of energy Feelings of worthlessness Thoughts of suicide Difficulty concentrating

Bulimia Binge eating always occurs once in a while These methods are then taken to expel the food from the body: Induced vomiting Excessive exercise Laxative abuse The binge eating and compensatory behavior must occur at least twice a week for three months.

PREVALENCE

Major depressive disorder Affects around 15 percent of people at some point in their lives. 2-3 times more common in women than in men. Occurs most frequently in among members of lower socio-economic groups. Most frequent amongst young adults. Affective symptoms more common in individualistic cultures than in collectivist ones.

Bulimia 2-3 percent of women and 0.02-0.03 percent of men in the US have been diagnosed with bulimia. Ratio of female to male is 10:1. Affects around 2 percent of adults. Onset in late teens, around 40% of females in college show symptoms. 3.2% in Tehran and 5.79% in Japan for women in the age group of 15-29. First degree relatives of people with bulimia are 10 times more likely to develop the disorder.
