Enhancing partnership among Africa RISING, NAFAKA and TUBORESHE CHAKULA Programs for fast tracking delivery and scaling of agricultural technologies in Tanzania Haroon Sseguya Technology Scaling Specialist Overview: Year 1 progress
2
Background Goal: Accelerate the scaling and delivery of agricultural technologies to improve smallholder maize- and rice- farming systems, household nutrition, and dietary practices in Tanzania Scaling - Expanding, adapting and sustaining successful policies, programs and projects in different places and over time to reach a greater number of people
3
Objectives 1.Introducing and promoting improved and resilient varieties of food crops (maize-legume, rice, vegetables); 2.Disseminating best-bet agronomic management packages; 3.Protecting land and water resources and foster agricultural biodiversity; 4.Introducing and promoting postharvest management; technologies to reduce losses and bring quality up to market standards; 5.Enhancing capacities of local communities.
4
Targets USAID FtF investments in the Zone of Influence: having at least 47,000 households with access to the technologies to diversify and increase their food supply and income sources, and improve the quality of degrading smallholder cropland; expanding the area under improved rice production technologies by at least 58,000 ha; increasing yields of both maize and rice by 50% per unit area as a result of these technologies being adopted.
5
Targets: FtF Zones of Influence
6
Progress ObjectiveOverall progress 1. Better crops Good job for sub-teams (maize-legumes, rice, vegetables); variations by location (agroecology, socioeconomic and cultural aspects); Participatory selection pending 2. Good practices 3. Natural resource management 4. Post-harvest management Not much yet due to nature of activity 5. Community capacity NAFAKA and non-NAFAKA locations vary; implications

10
Emerging issues The innovation: Activities must be linked to project objectives and indicators Involve farmers in selection of the best for their agroecosystem Compatibility with farmers’ interests Site selection very important Knowledge management Data collection not standard (need to use DCFs, database for farmers) Success stories Exchange and monitoring visits
11
Emerging issues Farmer engagement/capacity building Objective 5; not strong enough Learn from successes (Mvomero, Kilosa, …) and existing innovations (Innovation platforms in ‘mother’ Africa RISING)
12
Emerging issues Partnership: Sub-teams need to work more closely Actively involve local institutions in activities How to work with private sector for best results
