Public Perception of the Drought In The Tucson Basin

Introduction Report Purpose: Tucson Drought 76 Surveys related to drought Went out into public to hand out surveys Results of surveys broken up by years those who took the survey lived in Tucson. Studied results and came to conclusions

Where and When? 4 days Foothills Mall University of Arizona Last surveys were scattered in Tucson area

Questions In Survey How long have you lived in Tucson? Have you noticed anything different in the last few years that could be attributed to the drought? Are you aware of anything the city, county, or state has done to safeguard against the drought? In which job category do you consider yourself? Which of these above sectors could do more to conserve water? Would you be willing to conserve your water use, even if it meant that the saved water allowed for further population and economic growth in the state?

More Questions… Would you be willing to pay higher taxes in order to obtain a larger allotment of water to the state? Should artificial public ponds and lakes be drained during a drought? Should new developments be required to use water more efficiently? Would you be willing to subsidize agriculture in Arizona if it meant greater water savings? Do you have any recommendations about how the drought can be handled?

Number of People from Different Age Groups We Surveyed 25 residents of 0-10 years 25 residents of 11-20 years 17 residents of 21-30 years 9 residents of 30+ years

Problems and Contradictions Finding places where we were allowed to hand out surveys Getting 100 surveys complete Interpretation of inconclusive results Gathering a consistent residency demographic

Conclusions Tucson citizens are largely unaware of the drought. People are willing to conserve water, they just need to know how to help. Before officials do anything drastic, they should try informing the public on how they can help.
