4 X12’s Vision Create robust electronic data standards accomplishing business needs within existing & emerging technology infrastructures Administer a dynamic process that effectively supports the creation, review, approval & maintenance of various syntaxes (X12, EDIFACT, XML, OO-EDI, etc.)

5 X12’s Vision (continued) Synchronize with international standards development efforts Agree on one common global language for core components & business process analysis

6 X12’s Critical Activities Create robust electronic data standards: Continually updating existing X12 standard (next TAS cutoff: June 29) Defining standards documentation Developing approach to XML business standards

7 X12’s Critical Activities Administer a dynamic approval process: Initiated an accelerated review process during meeting week Reviewing X12 XML design guidelines Participating in creation of Joint Core Component development process

8 X12’s Critical Activities Synchronize with international standards development efforts: Actively participated & supported ebXML initiative—integrating into X12 offerings Reviewing X12 CEFACT, Liaison, & PITG Task Groups role in light of EWG changes

9 X12’s Critical Activities Agree on global core components & business process analysis: Signed historic agreement with EWG to jointly develop syntax neutral core components: “data building blocks” Exploring modeling techniques with Subcommittees

10 X12 Challenges Competing priorities & limited resources Need for additional expertise Organizing effectively to support ebXML & UN/CEFACT efforts Declining membership leads to greater dependency on Secretariat As dues revenues fall, member services are affected (Forming Dues work group)

11 X12 Opportunities Expand role as coordinating committee for cross-industry e business standards –Harmonize XML work of vertical industries, e.g. travel, mortgage, chemical, finance –Collect & assimilate existing data models Actively participate in international standards initiatives to ensure re-usability Build on joint efforts to achieve common global tools for e business exchange
