The Age of Exploration: What do I need to know???? 1. Reasons for exploration- What did they want? 2. Advantages- Reasons Europeans dominated? 3. Who were the explorers? 4. Where did they explore?

Reasons: Necessity Commercial- Supply/Demand Religious- convert to Christianity “God, glory, and gold.”

Advantages: Political- power hungry –Sponsorship ($ investments) –Provided with weapons Technological- improved navigation –Such as the lateen, astrolabe, caravels

Who is Prince Henry the Navigator? Prince in Portugal who built a navigation school to help train explorers on the newest navigational techniques/tools.

Henry the Navigator… He brought shipbuilders, mapmakers, sea captains, and instrument makers from all over Europe to live and study with him. invited sailors, travelers, and scholars from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East to share their knowledge of geography. Funded trips to West Africa. Ultimately, he helped scholars create more accurate maps of Africa.

What is the impact? Do these men matter? When they “discovered” new locations, what was the result? Look specifically where these men went and think what happened. Can you see their influences today? Make sure to fill in your maps and label the exploration routes correctly
