R E P R O T E D S P E C H E If you want to tell somebody else what Tom said. There are two ways of doing this: I’m feeling sick. 1. You can repeat Tom’s words: (DIRECT SPEECH) Tom said: “I’m felling sick.” Or 2. you can use reported speech: (INDIRECT SPEECH) Tom said that he was feeling sick.

DIRECT SPEECH INDIRECT SPEECH Milhouse said that he had lost his toy. Marge said that she was very busy. He said (that) he couldn’t resist her. “I’ve lost my toy.” “I’m very busy.” “I can’t resist Maggie.”

DIRECT SPEECH INDIRECT SPEECH Bart said (that) he had to go out. Liza said (that) she was learning Russian. “I have to go out.” “I’m learning Russian.” “I don’t feel very well.” Krusty said (that) he didn’t feel very well.

DIRECT SPEECH “We’ll be home late.” “I’m going to buy a car.” “We should get married.” INDIRECT SPEECH Carl and Lenny said (that) they would be home late. Hommer said (that) he was going to buy a car. Mr Skinner and Ms Krabappel said they should get married.

I was not in town last night. Depending on when we’re reporting speeches, it might be necessary to make some changes on time expressions. He said that he was not in town last night. Example: A crime was commited on July 14, 2013. On July 15, the suspect said: On the same day the policewoman reports: He said that he was not in town the night before. Any day later than July 15, she reports:

E A T T N T I N O Can you drive? In this case, we have a QUESTION in direct speech. So, we report: He asked me if I could drive.

John met Moira and asked how she was. She told him she was fine and asked about him. He said he felt wonderful. He added that it had been a long time since their holiday in Paris. She said she had loved every minute and that she’d never forget it. T H E M A R R I A G E P R O P O S A L John: “Hello, Moira. How are you?” Moira: “I’m fine. How are you?” John: “I feel wonderful.” John: “It’s been a long time since our holiday in Paris.” Moira: “I loved every minute and I’ll never forget it.”

She asked if they could go back there next spring. He said that he loved her. He asked if she would marry him and come to Paris with him on honeymoon. She said that she would and that she loved him, too. T H E M A R R I A G E P R O P O S A L Moira: “Can we go back there next spring?” John: “I love you, Moira.” Moira: “Oh yes, yes, I will. I love you too.” John: “Will you marry me and come to Paris with me on honeymoon?”
