GREAT LEADERS YOU KNOW With the person next to you, name some people you would call a leader. What do they have in common? Qualities, strengths, etc.

LEADERSHIP CONNECTION Who was the most inspiring leader you ever had? What was it that made the connection remarkable? How did you feel at the time?

LEADERSHIP DISCONNECTION What’s the worst experience of leadership you ever had? What was it that made it so bad? How did you feel at the time?

DIFFERENT TYPES OF LEADER No leader is the same Types of leader: Autocratic Democratic Laissez-Faire

AUTOCRATIC Leader makes decisions without reference to anyone else High degree of dependency on the leader Can create de-motivation and alienation of team May be valuable where decisions need to be made quickly and decisively

DEMOCRATIC Encourages decision making from different perspectives: Consultative: process of consultation before decisions are taken Persuasive: Leader takes decision and seeks to persuade others that the decision is correct May help motivation and involvement Team feel ownership of the sport/society and its ideas Improves the sharing of ideas and experiences within the team Can delay decision making

LAISSEZ-FAIRE ‘Let it be’ – leadership responsibilities are shared by the committee Can be useful where creative ideas are important Can be highly motivational as people have control over their working life Can make coordination and decision making time-consuming and lacking in overall direction Relies on good team work Relies on good interpersonal relations

TEAM LEADERSHIP Respect is key Communication– don't let others feel left out Get to know your team & what motivates them “A great leader can understand the unconscious motives of the followers better than the followers understand them themselves”. Burns (1978) Recognise contributions and celebrate peoples success – this will motivate them and show your support as a leader Leadership is about engagement: Help your committee believe in themselves Care about them Develop and inspire them

TEAM LEADERSHIP People will forget what you say and forget what you do but they will never forget how you made them feel. A good leader makes their team FEEL something.
