INTRODUCTION The process of sending and receiving information is call communication You spend 70% of your day communicating with each other. This includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing 42% listening, 32% reading, 15% reading, 11% writing

TYPES OF COMMUNICATION Verbal Non-Verbal

VERBAL COMMUNICATION Communication is the use of words to send information Speaking and writing are forms of verbal communication

VERBAL COMMUNICATION SPEAKING When speaking it is important to remember: Language: pronunciations Way you speak: use of slang words Emphasis: changes the meaning Voice: too loud, too soft, too fast, too slow Practice: practice makes perfect

VERBAL COMMUNICATION WRITING Most of what you learn comes from written words in turn you also share by writing School: assignments, quizzes, reports, tests, etc Personal: letters, cards, emails, texts Jobs require writing Clear writing is important Handwriting grammar Think through before you write

NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION Sending a message without the use of words is nonverbal communication Appearance and Grooming Body Language Personal Space

NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION APPEARANCE AND GROOMING First Impressions: before you say a word people will notice how you look How you appear sends a message Grooming is caring for your body

NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION BODY LANGUAGE Sending of messages through body movements Gestures Facial expressions Posture Can be positive and negative May need to use verbal communication to figure out nonverbal communication
