3 When Mission was Built (Founded) The mission was built on September 1,1772.The missionaries, soldiers, and Chumash began to build more permanent structures in the 1770s.The bricks were stacked on top of one another and held together with mud.

4 Mission Site Located in a spacious valley along the bears when they discounted many grizzles. Unlike many of the missions which we re-situated over time.

5 Father Juniper Serra Fr. Juniper Serra was born on the day of 24,1713.He died on August 28,1784 at age 70.He was born on the island of Majorca.He was baptized quickly because people thought he would die.

6 Founder of Mission His feast was on July1 st Honored in Roman Catholicism. Serra grew up to be a small man. Serra’s parents didn’t go to school but they want Serra to.

7 Mission Layout and Bell Tower

8 Agriculture and Livestock They raised sheep, cows, goats, and horses. The animals at the mission are killed and eaten.

9 Indians Joining this Mission San Luis Obispo was the first mission founded in land of the Chumash. The neophytes at the mission were called Obispeno.The Indians occupied a large part of the coast.They joined a mission and their life became more regimented.

10 Population When it was first built 42,525 people lived there. In July 1991 41,712 people lived in San Luis Obispo. In July 2011 45,525 people lived there.

11 Significant Events They had two private elementary schools. One private high school.The schools almost had 20,000.They had 16 notable bands.15 people were either born or raised in San Luis Obispo.

12 Current Use of the Mission The San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Mission is still the center of the busy downtown area. The creek by the mission witch once supplied water to main streets. The mission functions as a parish church.
