DAY 1
3
Mystery Substancce 1Mystery Substancce 2
4
Write Objective and Day 1 Materials
5
Mystery 2 Mystery 1 Picture Set up Notebook…… Observations: 1. 2. 3. Observations: 1. 2. 3. Predict: living or dead or nonliving Predict: living or dead or nonliving Life-like charact. Non life-like charact. Life-like charact. Non life-like charact. ID substance ID substance
6
Examine mystery objects using magnify glass &/or the stereo microscope – make a scientific drawing in your log booksstereo microscope scientific drawing Highly detailed Accurate Appropriately scaled Clearly labeled Before we begin……
7
Examples of Student Scientific Drawings
9
Before we begin…… Living, Dead, or Non-living? Something that is alive.. Satisfies ALL 8 characteristics of life Is not alive, and has never lived Was once alive
10
Begin observations
11
Mystery Substance 1 Living, Dead, or Non-living? Living - Potential for life Green food coloring in water
12
Living, Dead, or Non-living? Living - Potential for life Brine Shrimp Eggs Mystery Substance 2
13
It’s not always easy to ID life. Some dormant, or slow-growing organisms may appear to be nonliving unless observed under the right conditions or over a period of time.
15
Problem/Question How does salinity affect the number of brine shrimp eggs that will hatch? Independent Variable: –Concentration of Salt Dependent Variable –Number of living brine shrimp Write Your Hypothesis
16
If the ________ ___________ then the ________will ________________ IVHow IV changes DV What you think DV will do
17
Materials brine shrimp eggs 0%, 1%, 3%, 6% saline solution (sea salt) Sealed plastic Test tubes stereo microscope stirring rod toothpick well slide and cover slip metric ruler
18
Procedures 1) put 20mL of each solution into a test tube and label with tape. 2-0 2-12-32-6 Group # and % on each test tube If you are group 2: Ex) [2-0] [2-1] [2-3] [2-6]
19
2) Mark a toothpick at 1.5 cm 3) wet toothpick up to mark
20
4) Dip into brine shrimp eggs 5) Put toothpick into 0% solution test tube and stir until the eggs have come off 2-0 2-12-32-6
21
5) REPEAT STEPS 2-5 WITH 1%, 3%, AND 6% SALINE SOLN 6) CAP TEST TUBES
22
DAY 2
23
1) Suck up sample of 0%/shrimp mix into pipette 2-0 2-12-32-6 2) Put 10 drops into well slide
24
3) Examine under dissecting microscope 4) illustrate, comment Data Table 1
26
5) Count # hatched and unhatched in your sample 6) Calculate total # hatched and unhatched by multiplying sample # by 20 (b/c there are 20 ml in test tube.. And you examined 1 ml) 7) Suck up the solution from the well 2-0 2-12-32-6 8) Return to appropriate test tube
27
9) REPEAT STEPS 1-8 WITH 1%, 3%, AND 6% SALINE SOLN
28
DAY 3 Same as Day 2
29
Analysis and Conclusion Combine class data and take class average for Days 1 – 3 Construct a graph using the class averages Write conclusion
