1 Training the future leaders of the biomedical engineering field – world-class research, experience of clinical translation and exposure to making inventions into healthcare innovations. OXFORD CENTRE FOR DOCTORAL TRAINING IN HEALTHCARE INNOVATION This new 4-year postgraduate training programme is part of a £250 million strategic initiative funded by the EPSRC to raise postgraduate training in the UK to a new level of excellence. Based in state-of-the-art facilities in the new Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oxford, the Oxford Centre for Doctoral Training in Healthcare Innovation enables postgraduate students to gain first-hand experience of working on clinical problems and alongside engineers working in the healthcare industry and to conduct doctoral level research contributing to advancement of engineering in healthcare innovation. In the first year students take modules on biomedical engineering, design of clinical trials, entrepreneurship and commercialization, advanced research methods and undertake a hospital internship and 2 short project placements (some in industry), one of which is selected as the doctoral research topic. In years 2-4 students work on their selected research topic, with an option of spending a period in an overseas laboratory and attendance on specialist modules relevant to their research to enhance their training experience.
