Microscopes Life Science

What is a Microscope? Microscope: a tool used to make objects look larger than they really are. “Micro”- means very small “Scope”- means to look at.

Types of Microscopes Compound Microscope: –Has 2 or more lenses –Example: Light Microscope Simple Microscope: –Has only 1 lens –Example: Hand lens or Magnifying Glass

Electron Microscopes Electron Microscope- uses electrons to magnify objects. Magnifies objects 300,000 times their normal size.

Lenses is a curved piece of glassLens- is a curved piece of glass A lens brings light rays together or spreads them apart. –Bending of light causes objects to look either larger or smaller Magnification- to make something look larger than it is.

Using the Compound Microscope Ocular Lens – the eyepiece lens you look through –Magnifies 10x Three Objective Lenses: –4x – magnifies 40x larger –10x – magnifies 100x larger –40x - magnifies 400x larger

TOTAL MAGNIFICATION To find the Total Magnification: Multiply the Ocular lens x Objective Lens:
