2 What is Figurative Language?
Figurative language is used when a writer describes something using comparisons that go beyond literal meaning. The words mean more than what they say on the surface. This gives the writing a fresh look at a common subject. The objects that are being compared are different in enough ways so that their similarities, when pointed out, are interesting, unique and/or surprising. Figurative language is used in poetry and fiction, as well as in everyday speech.

3 Similes  A simile is a comparison between two unlike things that have something in common. A simile always uses the words like or as to make a comparison.

4 Similes  Examples It's been a hard day's night, and I've been working like a dog. - The Beatles My heart is like an open highway. - Jon Bon Jovi like two peas in a pod like Christmas in summer snow was like a blanket my love is like a red, red rose deer ran like the wind

5 Similes More Examples as hungry as a bear as nutty as a fruitcake
as quick as lightning as slippery as an eel as solid as a rock as stubborn as a mule as sturdy as an oak

10 Lyrics to “The River” by Garth Brooks. Find the similes.
You know a dream is like a river, ever changing as it flows. And a dreamer's just a vessel that must follow where it goes. Trying to learn from what's behind you and never knowing what's in store makes each day a constant battle just to stay between the shores.          And I will sail my vessel 'til the river runs dry.         Like a bird upon the wind, these waters are my sky.         I'll never reach my destination if I never try,         So I will sail my vessel 'til the river runs dry. Too many times we stand aside and let the water slip away. To what we put off 'til tomorrow has now become today. So don't you sit upon the shore and say you're satisfied. Choose to chance the rapids and dare to dance the tides.         -Chorus- There's bound to be rough waters, and I know I'll take some falls. With the good Lord as my captain, I can make it through them all.         -Chorus-

Trying to learn from what's behind you and never knowing what's in store makes each day a constant battle just to stay between the shores.          And I will sail my vessel (understood – live my dream) 'til the river runs dry.         Like a bird upon the wind, these waters are my sky.         I'll never reach my destination if I never try,         So I will sail my vessel 'til the river runs dry. Too many times we stand aside and let the water slip away. To what we put off 'til tomorrow has now become today. So don't you sit upon the shore (understood – be a bystander) and say you're satisfied. Choose to chance the rapids (understood - taking chances) and dare to dance the tides (understood – live life).         -Chorus- There's bound to be rough waters, and I know I'll take some falls. With the good Lord as my captain, I can make it through them all.         -Chorus-

Daniel Boone was a man. Yes. a big man. With an eye like an eagle and as tall as a mountain was he. Daniel Boone was a man. Yes, a big man. He was brave; he was fearless and as tough as a mighty oak tree. From the coonskin cap on the top of ol Dan to the heel of his rawhide shoe The rippin'est roarin'est fightin'est man the frontier ever knew. Daniel Boone was a man. Yes a big man. And he fought for America to make all Americans free. What a Boone. What a wonder. What a dream comer truer was he.

14 Lyrics to “It's Not Easy Being Green.” Find the similes.
It's not that easy bein' green;  Having to spend each day the color of the leaves.  When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow or gold-  or something much more colorful like that. It's not easy bein' green.  It seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things.  And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water- or stars in the sky.  But green's the color of Spring. And green can be cool and friendly-like.  And green can be big like an ocean, or important like a mountain, or tall like a tree.   When green is all there is to be  It could make you wonder why, but why wonder why? Wonder,  I am green and it'll do fine, it's beautiful!  And I think it's what I want to be.

16 Lyrics to “Like a Rock” by Bob Seger. Find the similes.
Stood there boldly Sweatin’ in the sun Felt like a million Felt like number one The height of summer Id never felt that strong Like a rock I was eighteen Didn’t have a care Working for peanuts Not a dime to spare But I was lean and Solid everywhere Like a rock My hands were steady My eyes were clear and bright My walk had purpose My steps were quick and light And I held firmly To what I felt was right Like a rock Like a rock, I was strong as I could be Like a rock, nothin’ ever got to me Like a rock, I was something to see Like a rock And I stood arrow straight Unencumbered by the weight Of all these hustlers and their schemes I stood proud, I stood tall High above it all I still believed in my dreams Twenty years now Where’d they go? Twenty years I don’t know Sit and I wonder sometimes Where they’ve gone And sometimes late at night When I’m bathed in the firelight The moon comes callin’ a ghostly white And I recall Recall Like a rock. standin’ arrow straight Like a rock, chargin’ from the gate Like a rock, carryin’ the weight Like a rock Like a rock, the sun upon my skin Like a rock, hard against the wind Like a rock, I see myself again Like a rock

19 Remember: Sometimes people confuse the word “simile” with the word “synonym.” Remember, a simile is a comparison between two things using the words like or as. If you’re trying to recognize a simile, look for “like” or “as” in the comparison! Synonyms are different words with nearly identical or similar meanings. If two or more items are being directly compared without the use of “like” or “as,” then you are encountering a metaphor, not a simile!
