3 Ways students respond to learning tasks: Engagement Strategic Compliance Ritual Compliance Retreatism Rebellion

4 Superficial and Profound Learning Superficial Profound Involves short-term memory Provides little in application. Compartmentalized instead of embedded in ways of thinking and doing. Affects students habits and worldviews. Goes beyond the acquisition of facts to learning to evaluate the facts. Leaves student with an understanding providing framework where additional learning can take place.

7 Developing a Classroom Profile The Highly Engaged Classroom Students are engaged most of the time. Has little or no rebellion. Has limited retreatism Has little ritual complience. The Well-Managed Classroom Has both strategic and ritual complience. Has little or no rebellion. Can be confused with Highly Engaged Classroom. The Pathological Classroom Has more rebellion than Highly Engaged and Well-Managed Classrooms. Teachers may have lower student expectations. Higher level of retreatism. Students can be engaged at times.

8 Indicators Engagement Indicators: Student finds the task meaningful. Student is persistent; even when expressing difficulty. Student is committed to the task. Strategic Compliance Indicators: Student is attentive to the task. Student spends only the required amount of time and effort on the task. Ritual Compliance Indicators: Student is very distracted and is not interested in the task. Student is very discouraged with the task. Students spends minimal time and effort on the task.

9 Indicators (cont) Retreatism Indicators: Student is not interested in the task, but uses time to distract others. Student is not persistent to task at all. Student engages in ritual behavior or rebellion. Rebellion Indicators: Student refuses to comply with the requirements of the task. Student is lacking persistence to the task. Student feels alienated with regards to the task.
