History Cupcakes first became popular in 19 th century America. The name is said to have come from the amount of ingredients used to make the cake (a cupful of flour, a cupful of butter, a cupful of sugar etc) Also, these cakes were originally baked in cups, hence the name.

Ingredients The ingredients of a cupcake can vary although most use the same basic ingredients. These are; Self-Raising Flour Caster Sugar Butter Eggs Baking Powder

Utensils In order to make these pretty little cakes, you will need; A Bowl Measuring Equipment Electric Mixer A Spoon Paper Cases Baking Tray

Making Cupcakes 2 Cups Self-Raising Flour (8oz) 1 Cup Caster Sugar (8oz) 1 Cup Butter (8oz) 4 Eggs 1 teaspoon Baking Powder

Making Cupcakes First of all, you need to wash your hands! Preheat the oven to 350 o F (175 o C). Place 18 paper cases on a baking tray. Combine all cupcake ingredients in a large bowl and whisk with an electric mixer until smooth and pale, taking about 2 – 3 minutes.

Making Cupcakes Spoon the mixture into the cases evenly. Then, carefully place them into the oven and let them bake for 20 minutes.

Making Cupcakes Remove the tray from the oven and cool for 5 minutes. Then, remove the cupcakes and cool on a rack.

Frosting Once you have your plain cupcake, you can decorate it in many different ways. One way is to use frosting. You do this by creaming sugar with butter to create a smooth spread. Here is a picture of some frosted chocolate cupcakes:

Making Frosting Ingredients; 3 Cups Icing Sugar 1 Cup Butter A Pinch of Salt Food Colouring Anything you want to decorate the top with- (sprinkles, sweets, etc).

Making Frosting To make frosting, cream the icing sugar, butter and salt with an electric mixer or a whisk until smooth. Add a few drops of food colouring and mix well. Spread the frosting liberally onto the cooled cupcakes and sprinkle with your topping.

Sprinkles As mentioned before, you can use lots of different sprinkles for your cupcakes. Here are some examples:

Special Events Cupcakes are commonly seen at weddings, providing excellent finger food. They are usually displayed on stands like these:

If you can resist eating them all… Store the finished cupcakes in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
