1 “The Marks of a True Worshiper” & “A Michtam of David” Lesson 5: Psalms 15 & 16

2 Psalm 15 “The Marks of a True Worshiper”  This Psalm was written by David  Probably after the Ark had been moved to Jerusalem [Zion] (2 Sam. 6:1-19; 1 Kings 8:1-4)  Two parallel questions are asked.  “LORD, who may abide in Your tabernacle?” “Who may dwell in Your holy hill?”  In other words, what kind of man will have an abiding relationship with Jehovah in which the man and his worship are continually accepted?

3 Psalm 15 “The Marks of a True Worshiper” In general, the true worshiper is one who… “Walks uprightly” STRONG’s DICTIONARY: without blemish, complete, full, perfect, sincerely (-ity), sound, without spot, undefiled, upright (-ly), whole Note the relationship of the Lord with the upright in Genesis 6:9; Ps. 101:6; 84:11; 18:23. “Works righteousness” (1 John 3:7) “Speaks the truth in his heart” As he speaks with others (Psalm 12:2) And as he speaks within himself (James 1:26)

4 Psalm 15 “The Marks of a True Worshiper” Specifically he…  Does not backbite  Does not do evil to his neighbor  Does not take up a reproach against his friend.  Despises the vile person (Ps. 139:21-22; Prov. 8:13)  Honors those who fear the Lord.  Swears to his own hurt and does not change  Does not exact usury (Lev. 25:35-37)  Does not take a bribe against the innocent (Exodus 23:8; Deuteronomy 16:19; Eccl. 7:7) He who does these things shall never be moved.

5 Psalm 16 – A Michtam of David The Term “Michtam” Scholars are not certain of the exact meaning, although many suggest either “golden” or “secret, mysterious.” Six Psalms (16, 56-60) have michtam in the descriptive heading. –Each of these Psalms is very personal. –Each expresses the security and comfort of one who trusts God.

6 Psalm 16 – David’s Golden Secret DAVID’S REFUGE IN LIFE (16:1-8) The Lord is His help. (vs. 1-4) –He puts his trust in God. –His goodness is nothing without God (Isaiah 64:6) –God’s people are his delight (Psalm 119:63; Romans 12:10) –He will give no respect to false gods (Exodus 23:13) The Lord is His portion (vs. 5-6) The Lord is His guide & strength (vs. 7-8, Psalm 119:145-148)

7 Psalm 16 – David’s Golden Secret DAVID’S HOPE IN DEATH (16:9-11) His joy and assurance (v. 9) His hope of the resurrection (v. 10) –A prophecy of the resurrection of Christ (Acts 2:23-31; 13:35-36) –The resurrection of Christ is the assurance of David’s resurrection and ours (1 Corinthians 15:20-23; 1 Peter 1:3) His anticipation of a positive future (v. 11) – note the anticipated position “at Your right hand” (Col 3:1; 1 Peter 3:22)
