Electricity and Magnetism Lesson 1
2
Electricity and Magnetism Access Prior Knowledge ◦Have you ever been in a thunderstorm? ◦How does that provide evidence that lightning has a lot of energy?
3
Electricity and Magnetism Purpose ◦We are going to read about static electricity. ◦We need to find out how particles become charged and what that means.
4
Electricity and Magnetism Most kinds of atoms have 3 kinds of particles. ◦Positive Charge ◦Negative Charge ◦No Charge Static electricity happens when a positive and negative charges between two objects that are close to each other are unbalanced
5
Electricity and Magnetism What are the building blocks of matter? What happens when positive and negative charges on objects that are close to each other are not balanced? Describe an experience you had with static electricity. Tell what happened to the charges on the objects involved and how those charges moved.
6
Electricity and Magnetism Vocabulary ◦State Electricity What does it mean? Use in sentences?
7
Electricity and Magnetism What causes static electricity on an object? Benjamin Franklin invented the lightning rod. Use the Internet or other resources to find out what a lightning rod does.
8
Electricity and Magnetism How do objects with the same charge behave differently than objects with opposite charges? What would happen if a negatively charged balloon were hung next to another negatively charged balloon?
9
Electricity and Magnetism What effect will a charged object have on an object with the opposite charge? Give two examples of static electricity. Write a paragraph that tells a curious first grader about static electricity. Include at least two experiences you might have in a typical day.
