Chapter Nine: The Microscopic World 9.1 Protozoans 9.2 Bacteria 9.3 Viruses

Investigation 9A What are the characteristics of protozoans? Protozoans

9.1 Protozoans A protozoan is a single-celled eukaryotic animal. Protozoans are most often placed in the Kingdom Protista with algae and slime molds. Protozoans need a moist environment to survive.

9.1 Structure and function of protozoans Ciliates are a group of protozoans that move by waving tiny, hair-like organelles called cilia.

9.1 Structure and function of protozoans Amoebas are protozoans that move by means of a pseudopod. (“false foot.”)

9.1 Structure and function of protozoans Flagellates are a group of protozoans that move using a whip-like organelle called a flagellum. A euglena is a flagellate commonly found in pond water.

9.1 Structure and function of protozoans A parasite is an organism that lives in or on another organism. Sporozoans are protozoan parasites in the bodies of certain animals.
