Building an Argument 1.Make a claim Your stance on the topic 2.Support the claim 3.Answer the objections Arguments against your claim

Making a Claim Claim – the position you take on a particular issue; also called the thesis. A claim can’t just be a statement of fact because a fact alone can’t be argued. A claim argues for one side of a controversy.

Writing a Claim Clearly state your topic and your position on the topic Use QUALIFIERS – Qualifiers are terms that make an opinion easier to support – almost, usually, maybe, probably, often, some, most, in most cases, if…then, likely, many, frequently

Types of Claims Statements of FACT claim that something is true or not true – The United States is winning the war on terrorism. Statements of VALUE claim that something does or does not have worth – Spreading democracy in the Middle East is not a good idea. Statements of POLICY claim that something should or should not be done – The United States military should withdraw all troops from Iraq.
