3 WHAT COULD SHE DO?  Twelve-year-old Carla is home alone when her mother's thirty- something boyfriend, Michael, comes to visit. Carla is shy and doesn't want to appear rude to Michael, so she lets him come in. Michael hasn't been there long before he comes over to Carla and stands really close to her. He begins to lean toward her face and say things about her body. She is very uncomfortable but doesn't know what to do or say. She backs up a little bit, but Michael follows her and puts his hands on her and starts to kiss her. Carla pulls away, and Michael gets angry and shoves her down. Before he leaves, he yells at her saying if she tells her mother what happened, he will say she came on to him. Carla is upset and doesn't know what to do.

5 REMEMBER  A trusted adult should be told about any abusive situation - no matter who is doing the abuse  Child abuse is never the child's fault.

6 ASSESSMENT  Cartoon :  Now that you have learned how to identify an abusive situation and refusal skills in an abusive situation I want you to put together a “story” in the form of a Cartoon for the following situation:  Thirteen-year-old Aletha's new stepfather has made several comments about her body. Her mother is never around when these comments are made. Recently, the stepfather has become bolder and is now touching Aletha in ways that make her feel uncomfortable  Take what you have learned and help Aletha to use refusal strategies to respond to her stepfather. Include more than one refusal strategy. Then list one or more people Aletha could tell about her problem.  Your cartoon must have at least 4-5 “scene boxes”. You will not be graded on your artistic ability, but a NEAT presentation is expected and will be factored into grading
