Elements What Are Their Parts? Elements are pure substances consisting of one type of atom that cannot be broken down into simpler substances. For chlorophyll the elements are: C = carbon H = hydrogen O = oxygen Mg = magnesium N = nitrogen

Elements How Are They Named? All known elements are listed on the periodic table. There are about 90 naturally occurring elements. Some are named after people, places, or from Latin or Greek names. Since there are only 26 letters in our alphabet a systematic way to write their symbols was developed.

Elements 3 Naming Rules Rule 1 – PRINT all symbols Rule 2 – If there is only 1 letter, that letter is always a capital. Ex: H for hydrogen Rule 3 – If there are 2 letters, the 1 st letter is a capital and the 2 nd is a small case. Ex: He for helium
