ATNF Users’ Committee: Director’s Update CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science Philip Diamond, Chief CASS & Director ATNF 11 July 2012

CASS Overview 7 sites ~290 staff Operate 2 National Facilities: ATNF CDSCC Constructing ASKAP Annual budgets FY11/12:  ATNF: $31.3M  CDSCC: $25.8M  Does not include ASKAP construction Parkes 64-m dish Tidbinbilla 1x 70-m and 2x 34-m antennas ASKAP 36x 12-m antennas ATCA 6x 22-m antennas Mopra 22-m dish

CASS Divisional Sites MRO Radiophysics Laboratory Geraldton Pawsey HPC Centre Geraldton Parkes Narrabri Mopra Tidbinbilla

Challenges in FY 2012/2013 Delivery of ASKAP Ramp-up of commissioning Seeking funds to deliver all 36 PAFs Implementation of new operations model, ensuring adequate funding stream Future status of Mopra Implementation of SKA pre-construction and implications of the site decision. Development of Earth Observation Informatics TCP (Transformational Capability Platform)

NASA’s Deep Space Network: CDSCC International network of antennas Australia (Canberra), USA and Spain HQ at JPL, Pasadena Support’s NASA’s interplanetary missions > 40 spacecraft

CDSCC Antenna construction Two new antennas: $100m

Mars Science Laboratory: lands 6 August  Parkes supporting CDSCC during ‘7 minutes of terror’, using modified receiver at 401 MHz

Some statistics

National Facility: Refereed Publications Publications in refereed journals that include data taken with CASS facilities

National Facility: Refereed Publications

CASS Staff: Refereed Publications Includes publications with ATNF data and all other refereed papers

Counts includes National Facility and other staff refereed publications. Tracking Publications: Six decades of radio astronomy Parkes ATCA

CSIRO have signed agreement with NRAO to obtain privileged access to VLBA time $200k has been provided for 100 hours of time over 2 years; aimed at larger projects. This time is in addition to time granted via the normal merit- based process. Valid proposals must have a PI based at an Australian astronomical institute. Proposals may be submitted for the 1 August 2012 deadline. A copy must also be sent to Tasso Tzioumis signifying the PI’s intent to submit a proposal under the CSIRO-NRAO arrangement. VLBA time

 A prototype receiver is installed and its performance is excellent A technology highlight.

 ATNF website is large ( ~ 80,000 pages)  Navigation needs improving  Design needs updating  Sub-sites involved are: – atnf.csiro.au – parkes.atnf.csiro.au – narrabri.atnf.csiro.au – outreach.atnf.csiro.au – intranet.atnf.csiro.au ATNF Website Refresh Project Rationale

 Internal project team  Platform recommendation – move from static site to content management system (Drupal)  Currently finalising site design and planning user testing  Two-stage implementation – (i) update static site with new design – (ii) progressively move content into Drupal  Implementation to start mid-2012 ATNF Website Refresh Project Process
