Basic information Physical Properties Melting Point:681 °C Boiling Point:1330 °C Physical state at room temperature:crystalline solid Colour: white Density: 3.123 g/cm3 Solubility in water: 128 g/100 ml (0 °C) 206 g/100 mL (100°C) Do not conduct electricity Chemical Properties Mild reducing agent Easily oxidised by powerful oxidising agent, such as chlorine KI is oxidised even more easily under acidic conditions Precautions Potassium iodide is a mild irritant, so it should be handled with gloves

Uses contained in hair processing chemicals in order to prevent later sun bleaching used in photography, in the preparation of silver (I) iodide for high speed photographic film used as an expectorant to treat lung congestion Interesting characteristics Potassium iodide may also be used to protect the thyroid from radioactive iodine in the event of an accident or attack at a nuclear power plant, or other nuclear attack In case of a nuclear emergency, iodine is used for the cleaning of wounds and should not be ingested. It is a poison.
