To form an infinitive, we use to+ the base form of a verb (to find, to help, to run, to be) I want to find a job. I want you to help me. I’m happy to help you. -an infinitive follows certain adjectives It’s important to write a good resume. -an infinitive follows certain it expressions He went to a counselor to get advice. -an infinitive is used to show purpose

Infinitive as a Subject We can begin the sentence with it and delay the infinitive. It is important to write a good resume. It isn’t necessary to include all your experience. It is expensive to study in the U.S. Dangerous, good, necessary, difficult, hard, possible, easy, important, sad, expensive, impossible, wrong It takes time to prepare for an interview. It is a pleasure to help you. -Use an infinitive with certain nouns -time, fun, patience, a pleasure, money, experience It is necessary for the manager to choose the best candidate for the job. It isn’t easy for me to talk about myself. -Include for+ noun or object pronoun to make a statement that is true of a specific person. It was hard for her to leave her last job.

Infinitive after Verb We can use an infinitive after these verbs. I need to find a new job. Agree, decide, promise, ask, expect, need, hope, plan, learn, want I decided to quit my old job. I want to make more money. She agreed to help me. I am planning to start a job. He hopes to get an A.

Object before Infinitive Don’t expect an employer to read a long resume. We often use an object between the following verbs and an infinitive I want you to look at my resume. Used to + verb and Am Used to+ Gerund I used to live in Uruguay. (I don’t live there anymore) I am used to living in Uruguay. ( I moved here two years ago and I am familiar with living here in Uruguay.) Loan used to live in Vietnam. Loan is used to living in the U.S. (accustomed to) Ana used to go to high school everyday. Now I am used to going to the ELP everyday. I used to speak Arabic all the time. Now I am used to speaking English most of the time. I used to use Head and Shoulders shampoo. I am used to using Pantene shampoo now. “I am used to it.” I didn’t used to drive in my country. I am not used to driving in the U.S.
