Textbook Questions and Review – p.387 (17.1) 1. Chemical Change because iron in the nail reacts with water to form a new compound (iron oxide Fe 2 O 3 ). Color change of the nail indicates a chemical change. 2. B 3. Physical Changes – energy is involved to change the size of a substance into smaller pieces. Chemical Changes – energy is involved in breaking and forming chemical bonds. 3

4. Answers: a) Chemical – new substance and a gas (CO 2 ) formed b) Physical – sand castle changes size and shape c) Chemical – egg white changes color as proteins are denatured. d) Physical – change of size occurs e) Chemical, the baked bread changes color as heat is used to bake it. f) Physical – Liquid water changes state to vapor (gas) Textbook Questions and Review – p.387 (17.1)

Textbook Questions and Review – p.397 (17.2) 1. Law of Conservation of Mass a)Total mass of the reactants equals the total mass of the products. Used to “balance” the equation. You can make predictions about how much of certain amount of reactant is needed to make a certain amount of product. 2. You need to work in a closed system so you can capture all of the product. In an open system gases could easily escape and be hard to quantify. 3. 10g – 9.3g = 0.7g of oxygen was produced in this reaction 4. A 5. Formula mass = is the total amu. Molar mass = mass of one mole of the compound in grams. 6
