2 Genetic engineering the changing of an organism’s DNA to give the organism new traits RECOMBINANT DNA – DNA that contains genes from one or more organisms Genetic engineering the changing of an organism’s DNA to give the organism new traits RECOMBINANT DNA – DNA that contains genes from one or more organisms
3
Recombinant DNA Made by inserting foreign DNA into Plasmids Plasmids are tiny rings of DNA from bacteria 3 Restriction site A bacteria with the new recombinant plasmid is Transgenic (has one or more genes from another organism added to its genome)

INSULIN An example of a medical advancement due to genetic engineering Human insulin is a hormone that helps your body use sugar, and keeps blood sugar levels from getting too high or too low The gene for human insulin is inserted into plasmids The transgenic bacteria containing these plasmids make human insulin The human insulin can be harvested from the bacteria and used to treat people with diabetes 5
