2 Problem - As of December 2007, Texas Tech University was placed on probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The probation was enacted due to the insufficient reporting of educational data. News of the university’s probation rapidly spread across Texas and into neighboring states. Texas Tech officials quickly calmed current student’s fears by announcing that no fault was found in the quality of any of the university’s programs. This message, unfortunately, may not have reached prospective students. Hartz, M. 2008. Letters warned Tech of accreditation trouble Accessed 2008 April 17.http://www.lubbockonline.com/stories/022308/loc_250014664.shtml McGowan, M. 40,000 a crowd: University officials anticipate record admission in fall. 3 Goal/Solution- Our ultimate goal is to help Texas Tech reach Chancellor Hance’s objective of 40,000 students by 2020. We suggest that Tech should create a student organization that tours high schools in the major metropolitan areas of Texas. This organization would visit major schools in cities such as Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, and Lubbock. Organization members would speak to students about the accreditation issue and about why they should attend Tech. This organization could be formed in two ways. Create the organization by appealing to the Student Government Association. Attach this organization to a class, such as an upper-level public speaking class. 1 McGowan, M. 40,000 a crowd: University officials anticipate record admission in fall. 4 We need you to imagine that you are high school students who are thinking about coming to Texas Tech University. Our group is going to pretend to be members of the organization we previously discussed. This PowerPoint is a brief example of what our proposed organization could present when visiting high schools around the state of Texas. http://www.orgs.ttu.edu/cki/Profile/Images/SEAL.jpg

10 http://www.depts.ttu.edu/centerforcampuslife/traditions/Traditions.pdf As of December 2007, Texas Tech University was placed on probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The probation was enacted due to the insufficient reporting of educational data. According to Tech officials, “Tech will have enough data to report to the association in September and be removed from probation in December.” “Meanwhile, the university is still fully accredited by SACS.” Texas Tech is still considered “a place where great things are happening inside the classroom and out. Where you can think big, live fully and thrive. Whoever you want to become, from here, it’s possible.” 1 1 1 1 2 McGowan, M. 40,000 a crowd: University officials anticipate record admission in fall.
