Investigation 3 Part 2 Focus Questions 9-25-09- Enter this page in your TOC and in your notebook. Write the questions and your responses. 1. What is air? 2. How do you know something is a gas? 3. Is air matter?

How Much Gas ? Investigation 3 Wrapping up Tuesday’s Lab 1.What caused the syringe plunger to go up during the reaction? 2.Why is a syringe more useful than a balloon? 3.What do you think will happen if you doubled the amount of citric acid? Predict 4.What do you think might happen if you doubled the amount of sodium bicarbonate?

Teacher Demonstration Inves 3 Part 3- How can you show that gas is matterHow can you show that gas is matter? Watch this demonstration ! Record the results in your ISN Draw the Demonstration List materials What will happen if I air up this ball? –Make a prediction !! Give an explanation of what happened
9
Explain what happened Higher mass from the beginning of the experiment means that the air has mass and takes up space so gas does have matter !
10
Free exploration with Syringes Syringe, Tube, Clip, Fork- goggles today Rules: Don’t point at anyone in class. Not a toy !! Don’t pop or break air bubbles Return everything in same condition…otherwise you get to buy a new one for class !
11
What happens when you push on syringe? Watch set up of the teacher and then make the same set up at your lab station. Use the fork to get the tubing off Use the clip to stop the air
12
Discuss What Happened What happened when you tried to push or pull on the syringe? What did you see? observationsRecord your observations in your ISN !
13
What happened AirAir is made of tiny particles that are in constant motion The popping of the syringe when you pull the gray portion out is what happens when you lower the air pressure, you get a vibration and the noise is the air going back into the syringe.
14
in What happens when you push the syringe in ? What is happening to the air? What is happening to the number of air particles? What is happening to the size of the air particles? What is happening to the space between the air particles? Write your answers in your ISN
15
What happens when you pull the gray part of the syringe out? What is happening to the air inside the syringe? What is happening to the number of particles of air inside of the syringe? Are the air particles getting bigger or smaller? What is happening to the space between the air particles ? Write your answers in your ISN
16
Compression When you push air particles together Same number of particles still there Same size of particles still there Air particles are closer together so the space between the particles is less When you push the syringe in
17
Expansion When air particles have more space between them Same number of air particles Same size of air particles Air particles spread out
18
Discuss Air as Particles PredictPredict what will happen if we put pink bubble wrap inside the syringe in push the syringe in? What will happen to the bubble? (write in your ISN) PredictPredict what will happen if we put pink bubble wrap inside a syringe and then pull the syringe out? What will happen to the bubble? (Write in your ISN)
19
Do not pop the bubble wrap ! Record your observations about the pink bubble wrap in your own table ! Space between particles Term to use Number of air particles in bubble wrap Size of air particles inside the wrap What did you see happen? Push in Syringe Pull out the syringe
20
Put the bubble wrap back in your container Prediction:Prediction: What will happen to this blue cube when I push the syringe in? Prediction:Prediction: What will happen to this gray cube when I push the syringe in? Write your predictions in your TOC.
21
Make a Table of Your Observations ObservationPush in syringe Pull out syringe Notes:Why did this happen ? Blue Cube Gray Cube
22
Results: Blue cube-Blue cube- when you compress/squish down the syringe the blue cube gets smaller inside the syringe. Grey cube-Grey cube- made of foam and doesn’t compress because there are holes so the particles can equalize. No matter what you do …the air in the blue cube has trapped particles- the cube responds differently because of its structure
23
Results The grey cube- equilibrium happens so the number of air particles even out. Air in A Syringe- A Fill out the picture on this page. Make an entry in your TOC Be sure to check how many dots, size of dots and how you are spacing your dots.
24
Main Ideas Gas is a form of matter. Gas may have mass and occupy space Gas is made of individual particles that are not connected to other particles Gas particles are relatively far apart and in constant motion
25
Main Ideas from Investigation 3 You can measure volume of gas with syringe. Compression- air particles pushed closer together. Same number of air particles, same size of air particles. Expansion- air particles are moving further apart. Same number of air particles, same size of air particles.
