NEPTUNE That wraps up our journey now lets go learn more
12
Our solar system is made up of the sun, eight planets, along with asteroids, satellites, comets, and space debris.
13
Geocentric Model The geocentric model was the belief that the Earth is the center of the solar system. THIS WAS PROVEN FALSE! Picture of Ptolemy
14
Heliocentric Model The heliocentric model is the idea that the SUN is the center of the solar system. This has been PROVEN using careful observations and satellite imagery.
15
The time of chaos! The solar system formed about 4.6 billion years ago as a result of the Big Bang Theory.Big Bang Theory.
16
Moving Planets A planet’s rotation is the spin of a planet on its axis. Earth’s rotation is ~24 hours or 1 day.
17
Moving Planets A planet’s revolution is the amount of time it takes to travel around the sun. Earth’s revolution is 356.25 days = 1 yr Are we having fun yet!
18
The shape of a planet’s revolution (or orbit) is known as an ellipse.
19
Here is the last one! Gravity and inertia help to keep the planets in orbit. The Earth appears to be spherical in shape but is actually an oblate spheroid, or wider at the equator.
