1 Prospects of the Floating Nuclear Power Plant overseas projects State Atomic Energy Corporation “Rosatom” JSC “Concern Rosenergoatom” «Directorate for Floating Nuclear Power Plant Construction”

2 Introduction Floating Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) is a new type energy source based on Russian technologies of atomic shipbuilding and designed to provide a reliable whole-year energy supply to households, industry and infrastructure facilities in remote North and Far East regions of the Russian Federation and other countries. FNPP’ major element is a floating power unit (FPU), which is a non self-propelled type of vessel with inbuilt module energy equipment. FPU is industrially assembled and towed by sea to its operation site after it is fully ready to run. The other element of the FNPP is a complex of mooring and onshore facilities with energy transmission equipment which is built at site. FNPPs are located in coastal areas to supply local consumers with electric and thermal energy and operate as an energy source for a water desalinating factory.

3 Advantages of the project  Reliable, safe, technically proven and economically profitable energy source,  Module factory assembling, construction and testing at the yard ensures effective quality control of power units and reactor equipment,  Higher energy security through increased power reservation levels and predictable electric power and potable water tariffs,  Minimal infrastructure and onshore personnel requirements,  Serial NPP construction reduces investment cost by 25-30%,  Substitution for power plants using organic fuels,  Environmentally clean energy, no pollution or greenhouse gas emission.

4 Ship nuclear reactors and its operation experience Package of unique construction and technological solutions at the core of the FNPP design has proven its high reliability Russia is a worldwide leading producer and operator of transportable (ship) nuclear reactors. Russian experience of ship reactors operation exceeds 7000 reactor-years

5 Safety Regulations  Full compliance with present requirements of nuclear safety regulations:  Russian national nuclear safety regulations  recommendations of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)  regulations of the See Register for atomic vessels  regulations of shipbuilding industry  International maritime organization (IMO) requirements  The construction of FNPP is carried out in cooperation with leading scientific, design and industrial institutes and enterprises  Compliance with ecological and environmental regulations

7 FNPPs arrangement  floating power unit equipped with two KLT-40S reactors with 70 MW of overall electric power capacity,  onshore facilities with energy transmission equipment.

8 Safety Aspects  Use of mastered technologies of design, construction and operation based on ship and power reactors  Conservative approach to design  Principle of internal self-protection of the reactor unit  Minimization of radioactive waste  Active and passive safety systems with high efficiency and reliability  High level training of operating staff  Effective quality control at all stages of the design, construction and operation  High safety culture  Licensing and supervision by state supervision authorities

10 Water desalination plants with FNPP as a an energy source Current worldwide deficit of fresh water is estimated by UNO at 250 billion cubic meters a year By 2025 world fresh water deficit will grow up to 2 trillion cubic meters a year FNPP may be used to provide energy either for onshore or floating water desalination plants. Combination of water desalination plant with FNPP ensures stable output of fresh water along with electric energy to local consumers.

11 Construction of the first FNPP JSC “Concern Rosenergoatom” is constructing the head FNPP with two KLT-40S reactors which would have 70 MW of overall power capacity. This FNPP would become a reference specimen in a series of plants of this type, which JSC “Concern Rosenergoatom” is planning to export. General contractor for floating power unit supply – JSC “Baltiysky zavod” or Baltiysky shipyard (Saint-Petersburg). Reactor supplier – JSC «OKBM AFRIKANTOV» (Nizhny Novgorod). FNPP project start - 2006. First FNPP commissioning - 2013. Operation site for the first FNPP - Vilyuchinsk (Kamchatsky region).
