2 Experimental Design Question: Does the amount of sleep a student gets affect how well the student does in school? You must: design an experiment that utilizes each step in the process of experimental design

3 Experimental Design 1) Ask a question (done) 2) Form a hypothesis 3) Describe a controlled experiment 4) Describe how the results could be recorded and analyzed 5) How would you decide whether your results supported or refuted your hypothesis?

4 The Word Theory What is a theory? - Describe it in your own words and give an example.

5 Theory: General Usage In general usage, the word theory takes on a very different meaning then it does when it is used in science. In general usage a synonym for theory could be speculation, or assumption People only also use the word theory when they are really talking about a hypothesis Example: I have a theory about why the computer isn’t turning on.

6 Theory: Scientific Meaning This understanding of the word can lead to misconceptions about scientific concepts when the word is used scientifically; they will sometimes say, “That is just a theory,” thinking that a certain concept is not supported by evidence In, science the word theory applies to a well- tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations → Example: Evolutionary Theory is immensely important to biology
