VOLUME Volume Definition: The amount of space an object takes up. Tools/Instruments for volume: –Liquid volume: Graduated Cylinder –Solid volume: Ruler
3
Units MAIN unit for liquid volume: LITER MAIN unit for a solid volume: cubic centimeters ( cm³ ) Most of the time in class we will be labeling in milliliters (mL).
4
VOLUME OF LIQUIDS For liquid volume we will use the instrument called a graduated cylinder To find the volume of liquids we look at the bottom curve of the water level in the graduated cylinder. The bottom curve of water is called a meniscus.
5
When reading the meniscus you use the bottom of the curve. You must be at eye level and have the graduated cylinder on a flat level surface.
6
What is the volume of the liquid?
7
Answer: 70 mL

Volume of Solids To find the volume of a solid we will use a ruler. We will measure the length, width, and height of the object. You will then multiply the three numbers Formula for volume-- Length x Width x Height Label in cm³ (cubic centimeters)
