Pre-Lab Cornell Notes

 What is density?  A measure of how tightly packed together particles in an object are  Mass Per Unit Volume  D= m/v

 SI unit of mass is the…  Mass ≠ Weight  We can measure an object’s mass using a triple beam balance OR electronic scalestriple beam balance

 V= l x w x h  Volume is a derived unit  Units are cm 3 or mL  1 cm 3 = 1 mL

 The volume of regular-shaped objects can be found using a metric ruler to measure l, w, and h  The volume of irregular-shaped objects can be found using water displacement

 Drop the object in a graduated cylinder of water of a known volume  Determine the change in water height by reading the meniscus meniscus

 Watch the displacement animation, then write 4-5 easy steps for finding the density of an irregular-shaped object  1.  2.  3.  4.  Rubber Stopper Animation Rubber Stopper Animation

 Mrs. Hendee eraser has a mass of 25g and a volume of 24 cm 3. What is the density of the eraser?  My physical science textbook has a volume of 1000 cm 3 and a mass of 5000g. What is the density of the textbook?

 Mrs. Hendee’s stapler has a mass of 543g. When it is placed in 500 mL of water, the meniscus raises to 875 mL. What is the density of the stapler?
