15. The End of the Year: Won Well, yes, at first we compared ourselves that first morning in Oliver Hall. It was a Saturday. Summer. Downtown Richmond was empty, it seemed. We walked through echoes up those stairs, and found the room that belonged to us. So this was where that endless application brought us! I sat at a table in the back, fiddled with my papers, new notebooks, chatted with Tracey (Tracy?) – (good to meet you, I know, me too, I was afraid I might be late, where did you park?). Minutes passed. How do doctoral students sit I wondered, am I doing it right? Dr. Magill broke the ice. Why are you here, she asked. What has brought you to this place? Madly I rehearsed my answer and then we stood and said our things. I recall not a word of it. Tonight, I sat at my dining room table, and saw the pings and emails from my friends, all asking how are you doing? Can I help? Will you be OK?
